Hostels in Ushuaia: where to stay, how to get there and what to do
Ushuaia is the city at the end of the world: it's squeezed between the Fuegian Andes and the Beagle Channel, and for many backpackers it's the last stop on the trip down Route 3. The best things are close by and you can do them on your own: Tierra del Fuego National Park is 12 km away, the Martial Glacier 7 km and Laguna Esmeralda 18 km. From here you can also cross to Chile and sail the Beagle Channel. Watch out: sleeping and eating cost more than in the north of the country.

Getting around Ushuaia
There are four city bus lines (A, B, C and D), run by the municipal company UISE. A ticket costs AR$ 1,550 (≈ US$ 1) and you pay with a SUBE card, SUBE QR, debit, credit or prepaid card.
No city bus line goes to the National Park, Laguna Esmeralda or the base of the Martial Glacier: for those, «regular transport» minibuses leave from Av. Maipú and Juana Fadul.
Taxis use a meter and remises have a fixed fare agreed by phone; ask the price before getting in.
Home Bike (Araucanos 213) rents bikes for AR$ 30,000 a day (≈ US$ 19), and the coastal bike lane along the Paseo de la Centolla runs as far as the Paseo del Fuego shopping centre.
The centre (San Martín, Maipú and the pier) is walkable, but the city climbs uphill from the shore: getting back to the hillside hostels with shopping bags is tiring.
Uber, Cabify, DiDi and taxis in Ushuaia
Cabify and DiDi don't operate, and Uber is in a legal dispute with the municipality: don't count on finding cars through the app; taxis and remís are the safe option.
Uber No data
The most widely used in the country: Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Mendoza, Salta and Bariloche. It takes card, cash and Mercado Pago, and the same account you use at home works here.
Cabify Not available
Strong in Buenos Aires; also in Córdoba, Mendoza and Bariloche. Cash only in Buenos Aires, Rosario, Mendoza and Córdoba; to create an account it asks for a phone number and email address.
DiDi Not available
Works in Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Salta, Bariloche and other cities (not in Mendoza). You pay by card or in cash.
Status of each app according to their official sites and the local press; it may change. The buttons open the official stores (Google Play for Android, App Store for iPhone).
The 3 best areas to stay in Ushuaia
1Lower centre: San Martín, Deloqui and Piedrabuena To do everything on foot
🚌 0.15 to 0.7 km from the bus stop
From here, the Maipú and Fadul bus and minibus stop, the boat-trip pier and Calle San Martín are 2-10 minutes away on foot, which is why these hostels score between 9.5 and 9.7 for location. It's the best base if you're only here a few days, without a car, and want to head out on tours early. Downsides: the dorms tend to be small, some private rooms get noise from the avenue and in high season they fill up first.
2Hillside above the centre: Av. Magallanes Close, but uphill
🚌 ≈ 0.5 km from the bus stop
On Av. Magallanes, on the slope that rises behind the centre. You can walk down to Calle San Martín in a few minutes and there are nice views. The problem is getting back: guests talk about a very steep climb, exhausting with a backpack, and in winter the slope gets tricky. Location and cleanliness scores are lower than in the lower centre (8.1-8.4).
3West: upper Gob. Paz and Primer Argentino Quiet and newer
🚌 ≈ 1.8 to 2.7 km from the bus stop
Residential neighbourhoods in the west of the city. It's for anyone who puts a quiet night's sleep and new facilities ahead of location: guests highlight new beds, spacious kitchens and good heating, and there are shops nearby. Downsides: the bus stop is 25-35 minutes on foot, or a city bus or taxi ride, and location scores between 7.8 and 8.4 in reviews.
The 8 recommended hostels in Ushuaia
All 8 are hostels with shared dorms, ordered by score and number of reviews. Check how to pay before you arrive: most take cash only and one, the other way round, doesn't accept cash.

I liked everything; I was scared because I was travelling alone, but it was super safe and quiet. The only thing I didn't like is that it's the same breakfast every day; it's still very tasty.

Backpacker tips for Ushuaia
1Bring cash and a card too
Antarctica, Portal Antártico, House 1903, Cruz del Sur and Amanecer de la Bahía take cash only; Anum, the other way round, doesn't accept cash, and Oshovia asks for a US$ 25 cash deposit. City buses are paid with SUBE, QR or card.
2Cook at the hostel
All 8 hostels have a shared kitchen, and La Anónima, the supermarket locals use most, has a branch on Av. San Martín. The Paseo del Fuego shopping centre has a food court and a free shuttle from Maipú and Lasserre: it leaves at 1 pm and 6 pm and returns at 9 pm.
3Don't buy gear: rent it
Trekking boots can be rented for AR$ 10,000-15,900 a day (≈ US$ 6.5-10) at Patagonia Rental, Uliwaia or Cumbre Rental, and you can also rent jackets and trousers.
4Register before you set off hiking
The Tourism Department requires a compulsory registration for mountain trails. Fires are prohibited (only stoves are allowed). Emergencies: Civil Defence 103 or 911.
5Reserve early whatever has limited places
The crossing to Puerto Williams takes 10 passengers per trip, and it's also worth reserving the walk at the Isla Martillo penguin colony and, in summer, the bus to Punta Arenas. In January and February hotel occupancy tops 90 %: reserve your bed in advance.
6If you cross to Chile, declare your food
When entering Chile you have to declare fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy and honey to the SAG; if you make a false declaration you can be fined. Bring your passport or ID.
7Dress in layers against the wind
Even in January the average high is 14 °C, the wind averages 25 km/h in January and it can snow from April to November. Bring a windproof and waterproof jacket, a hat, gloves and boots that can handle mud.
8Free zone, but no illusions
Tierra del Fuego is a special customs area (Law 19,640) and some imported goods are cheaper than on the mainland, but before buying electronics ask Customs what you can take with you when you leave the island.
