Hostels in Rosario: where to stay, how to get there and what to do
Rosario is Argentina's third city, on the bluffs of the Paraná and about 290 km from Buenos Aires. It's the birthplace of the Flag: the National Flag Memorial towers over the riverfront and the centre can be explored on foot. For backpackers it's a one- or two-day stop: it's about 4 hours from Buenos Aires and 5-6 from Córdoba, has central hostels with terraces and combines the river, Pichincha's bars, museums and the Messi and Che routes.

Getting around Rosario
City buses can only be paid with a SUBE card since August 2023: the Movi card no longer works for travel. You can also pay with a contactless Visa or Mastercard, a phone or an NFC watch, at the same fare, so foreigners don't need to buy a SUBE.
The basic fare is ≈ US$ 1.4. One ticket lets you transfer free between lines for 60 minutes (Monday to Friday, 6 am to 10 pm) or 120 minutes at night. You can top up your SUBE at the bus station.
Useful lines: 115 and 115 AE (airport, bus station and centre) and 101 (bus station and centre). For routes and frequencies, use the «Cuándo llega» app or the website comollego.rosario.gob.ar.
Taxi: the licensed apps (Cabify, Movi Plus and Viajá Rosario) give a 20-35% discount on taxi fares; Uber isn't licensed. A typical ride across the city costs ≈ US$ 2.
Bikes: Mi Bici Tu Bici has 88 stations (2024 figure) and works with a pass you buy through an app or website. The riverfront has about 15 km that are good for cycling.
The centre is done on foot: the National Flag Memorial, the River Station and Che's house are 0.2-0.8 km from Plaza 25 de Mayo. Pichincha and the MACRO and Castagnino museums are 2-2.5 km away: a taxi or bike is best.
The 3 best areas to stay in Rosario
1Centre and the Flag Memorial Everything on foot
🚌 ≈ 3.7 km on foot from the bus station
The most convenient base for anyone who wants to walk: High and Colmena are 0.9-1.3 km from the National Flag Memorial (12 to 17 min on foot), with the river a few blocks away. The downsides: the bus station is about 3.7 km away on foot (≈ 50 min), so on arrival day bus 101 or 115, or an 8-9 min taxi, is best; and High's reviews mention some street noise.
2South centre: upper Mitre More residential
🚌 ≈ 4.7 km on foot from the bus station
Pin-Up is at Mitre 1688, ≈ 2 km from the Flag Memorial and 2.7-3.3 km from Pichincha. It wins on residential calm and services: breakfast included, 24-hour reception and airport transfer. The downsides: the bus station is 4.7 km away on foot (≈ 62 min, ≈ 10 min by taxi), you need a bus or bike to get to the riverfront, and outside reviews mention some noise at night.
3Costa Alta (north shore) Peace and river
🚌 ≈ 8.4 km from the bus station
Soles is at Iturraspe 3925, 50 m from the Paraná and a 7-min walk from La Florida beach, with Rambla Catalunya ≈ 1.3 km away for river fish. It's for anyone after calm and several nights in a neighbourhood of houses. The downsides: the bus station is 8.4 km away (≈ 13 min by car) and the Flag Memorial 11.2 km on foot; it doesn't work as a base for exploring the centre without transport.
The 4 recommended hostels in Rosario
Four hostels with scores from 8.7 to 9.9 out of 10: two in the centre, one in upper Mitre and one on the north shore. Mixed dorms are at High, Colmena and Pin-Up; Soles offers private rooms only.

10A 120-year-old building
What I liked most was Barby's service, a lovely woman and a very good host of this great hostel. A 120-year-old building with very special charm. A quiet, picturesque place like few others.

9Good value in a central hostel
The room, kitchen and bathroom were clean and the beds had sheets in good condition. It's well located, central and very close to the Costanera. The staff were very friendly and the fingerprint entry system is very handy, so you don't have to worry about keys or cards.

10A lovely little house
From the moment we arrived we loved the place, a very cosy house. We also used the kitchen and everything went great. We loved the breakfast and the house's patio. The only thing would be the location if you want to go to the centre: we were a bit far, but we chose it for the river one block away.

9Very friendly service. It made me believe in hostels again.
I arrived earlier than planned and they still did my check-in. They stored my bags while I got a padlock for the locker. The location is a real privilege, in the centre, and the building is beautiful. The lockers in the rooms were very small.

Backpacker tips for Rosario
1Pay for the bus with SUBE or a card
The Movi card no longer exists for buses since 2023. With a contactless Visa or Mastercard, your phone or an NFC watch you pay the same as with SUBE (≈ US$ 1.4).
2Leave your backpack at the bus station
If you arrive early, the bus station has left luggage, ATMs and SUBE top-ups, and it's open 24 h. Hostel check-in starts between 12 and 2 pm.
3Eat river fish and bodegón food
On the south riverfront and at La Florida/Rambla Catalunya they serve boga, dorado and surubí (river fish); in Pichincha there are plenty of bodegones (traditional neighbourhood restaurants) with big portions.
4Mind the Flag Memorial's opening hours
The tower costs ≈ US$ 1.3 and is open Monday to Friday from 1 to 6 pm; Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 9 am to 1 pm and from 2 to 6 pm. Belgrano's crypt and the Flag Room are free.
5Museums: check the opening hours
MACRO has free entry according to the tourism board, but the opening hours going around differ. Check at castagninomacro.org before you go.
6Book on long weekends
At Easter 2026 (Semana Santa) hotel occupancy was around 70% and in the winter holidays it reached 56%. Visitors come mostly from Santa Fe, Buenos Aires and Entre Ríos.
7Taxi by app, and at night
Cabify, Movi Plus and Viajá Rosario are the authorised apps and give a discount on taxi fares. If you go out in Pichincha, it's best to get back by taxi or app.
8Check Ezeiza if you're coming from far away
From 25 October to 11 November 2026 one Ezeiza runway operates shortened and some foreign airlines cancel or change routes. Check your ticket.

Weather and seasons in Rosario
Rosario is a nearby urban getaway: demand rises on long weekends and public holidays more than by season. Winter holidays, Easter week and 20 June (Flag Day) are high-demand times, and it's best to reserve in advance. From October to March it's hot and there's the river; from June to August it's drier and cooler, and the museums and Pichincha keep going.

Plan the rest of your trip
Rosario has its own airport (ROS) with Aerolíneas Argentinas flights to Buenos Aires (Aeroparque), Puerto Iguazú and Salta, and international flights to Lima, São Paulo, Panama, Punta Cana and Madrid. The way most backpackers go is by bus: Buenos Aires is ≈ 4 h 13 away (≈ 298 km and ≈ 137 departures a day), Córdoba ≈ 5 h 42, Santa Fe ≈ 2 h 20, Mendoza ≈ 14 h and Salta ≈ 19 h. There's also a train from Retiro (≈ 7 h 34, from ≈ US$ 8 in first class). Rosario works as a stop to break a long trip to Tucumán, Salta or Iguazú in two.
SUBE. Since 7 August 2023 city buses can only be paid with SUBE; the Movi card stopped working for travel. You can also pay with a contactless Visa or Mastercard, a phone or an NFC watch, at the same fare (≈ US$ 1.4).
How do I get from the airport to the centre?
On line 115 «Aeropuerto», which leaves from outside the airport terminal, stops at the bus station and takes ≈ 45 min to the centre; pay with SUBE or a contactless card. The airport is ≈ 13 km away. By taxi or with the licensed apps (Cabify, Movi Plus, Viajá) it's ≈ 25 minutes.
Is the bus station far from the centre?
Yes, if you're carrying a backpack. Mariano Moreno Bus Station (Cafferata 702) is ≈ 3.8 km from Plaza 25 de Mayo: 4.4 km on foot (almost an hour) or ≈ 8 minutes by taxi. Lines 101 and 115 connect it with the centre, and the hostels in the centre are 3.7-4.7 km away on foot.
How much does it cost to go up the National Flag Memorial?
The tower costs ≈ US$ 1.3 and has a lift since the reopening on 20 June 2026. The crypt and the Flag Room are free. Hours: Monday to Friday from 1 to 6 pm; Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 9 am to 1 pm and from 2 to 6 pm. Children under 5 and people with disabilities don't pay.
Can you visit Messi's or Che's house?
Not inside. Messi's house (Estado de Israel 525, La Bajada) is still in the family's hands and you can see the façade with murals; Che's birthplace (Entre Ríos 480) is private. The Messi circuit has 13 free stops and the Che one, 6.
Is it better to stay in the centre or on the north shore?
