Cheap places to stay in Esquel and Trevelin: how to get there and what to do
Esquel is a city of about 37,000 people at 593 m above sea level, in northwest Chubut, and a cheap base for four things: the La Trochita steam train, Los Alerces National Park, Trevelin with its Welsh heritage (24 km away) and Cerro La Hoya. There are very few hostels, so here you'll find capsule beds, apartments and cabins with a kitchen to share between 2 and 4 people, plus one hostel in Trevelin. Several sights need a car, a tour or buses with rigid schedules.

Getting around Esquel and Trevelin
The city bus has three lines (1, 2 and 3), run by Jacobsen, and comes every 9-10 minutes Monday to Friday between 6:30 am and 8:55 pm. You pay with a SUBE card, a debit or credit card, or a Mercado Pago QR code, and a ticket costs ≈ US$ 1.2.
To get to Trevelin, Jacobsen has up to 16 departures a day Monday to Friday (between 6:45 am and 11:00 pm) and 11 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays; the trip takes 45-55 minutes.
There are remís cooperatives (Badén, Néstor, Nevada, Unión and La Terminal) and taxi stands in the centre, at the casino, at the hospital and at the bus station.
To get around on your own, Limits Adventure rents bikes at Av. Alvear 1069, and there are car rental offices in town and at the airport.
The centre is walkable: from the bus station to Plaza San Martín it's 2.3 km by street. Without a car, Los Alerces is done with the Jacobsen bus and Trevelin with the city bus; Nant y Fall, Nant Fach and the tulip fields have no documented public bus.
The 3 best areas to stay in Esquel and Trevelin
1Centre: San Martín, Perito Moreno, Sáenz Peña and Darwin To walk everywhere
🚌 ≈ 1.3 to 1.8 km from the bus station (straight line)
My Pod House, Departamento Céntrico, La Quilmeña and Liberata are between 0.1 and 1 km in a straight line from Plaza San Martín, so you can do the centre on foot. It's the area for anyone arriving by bus and travelling alone or as a pair. Downside: the bus station is 1.7-2.4 km away by street (23 to 32 minutes on foot with a backpack, or a short remís ride) and the La Trochita station is 1.3-1.5 km away.
2Outside the centre: Alsina, Rivadavia and Villa Ayelén Near the bus station or with a car
🚌 ≈ 0.6 to 3.3 km from the bus station (straight line)
Lejana Patagonia is 0.3 km from the La Trochita station and 0.6 km from the bus station, about 8 blocks from the centre. Lahuan, on Rivadavia, is at the entrance to the city: 1.1 km from the bus station and ≈ 2.9 km on foot from the plaza. Cabaña Ayelen is in Villa Ayelén, a residential neighbourhood ≈ 4.3 km by street from the bus station. Downside: without a car or a remís you walk a lot, especially to Ayelen.
3Trevelin: 24 km from Esquel For the Welsh Route
🚌 ≈ 24 km from the Esquel bus station (45-55 min by bus)
HostelDraiggoch isn't in Esquel but in Trevelin, a Welsh village 24 km away, ≈ 1 km from its centre. It's good for sleeping near the Welsh Route (Welsh tea, Molino Andes Museum, Malacara's tomb) and it connects to Esquel on the Jacobsen bus. Downside: it doesn't work if you want the train and the Esquel bus station within reach, and Nant y Fall and Nant Fach are 17-18 km from the village, with no documented public bus.
The 8 recommended places to stay in Esquel and Trevelin
Esquel has almost no hostels: this guide brings together the cheapest options with good reviews, from capsule beds to apartments and cabins with a kitchen to share between 2 and 4 people, plus the only hostel, which is in Trevelin. The reference price is a room for 2 (or the bed, in the capsules). Distances to the bus station are measured in a straight line: on foot it's a bit more.

Backpacker tips for Esquel and Trevelin
1Reserve La Trochita in advance
In tulip season several departures sell out. You buy tickets at latrochita.org.ar or at the station ticket office (Monday to Saturday, 8 am to 1:30 pm); arrive 1 hour before. Esquel and Trevelin residents pay ≈ US$ 30 and international tourists ≈ US$ 109.
2Los Alerces without a car: possible, but tight
The Jacobsen bus leaves Esquel at 7:00 am and reaches Villa Futalaufquen at 8:30 am; the return leaves at 3:30 pm. It runs Monday to Friday, and there's no confirmed weekend service: check before you go.
3Ask what's open in Los Alerces
In January 2026 there was a fire in the park and the northern area reopened in stages. Before you go, ask at Parques Nacionales or the visitor centre which areas and trails are open.
4Park entry and Flexipass
Foreigners ≈ US$ 23 a day and Argentines ≈ US$ 10; the second day within 72 h is 50 % off. If you're staying several days, the 3-day Flexipass costs ≈ US$ 45 and the 7-day one ≈ US$ 80 (general price).
5The Alerzal Milenario is the expensive excursion
The Lago Menéndez boat trip with Glaxiar costs ≈ US$ 123 and doesn't include the transfer to Puerto Chucao, the park entry or the packed lunch. On a tight budget, first look at which parts of the park you can do on your own.
6Trevelin in a day, by bus
Esquel–Trevelin runs often and in the village you can do everything on foot: plaza, Molino Andes Museum, Malacara's tomb and Welsh tea houses (Nain Maggie, tel. 02945 480232; La Mutisia, 02945 480165). Nant y Fall (≈ US$ 10) and Nant Fach (≈ US$ 16) are 17-18 km from the village and need a car, a remís or tourist transport.
7Wrap up warm, even in summer
Nights can drop to around 0 °C from December to February. In winter there's ice on RN 259 and the Futaleufú crossing into Chile has closed for a few days because of frost: if you travel from May to September, bring warm clothes and check the state of the road.
8Cook and split the cost
Almost all the places to stay in this guide have an equipped kitchen, so buying food and cooking is the cheap way. And between 3 or 4 people, a cabin or a big apartment works out better than separate beds.
