Hostels in Bariloche: where to stay, how to get there and what to do
Bariloche is the backpacker base of northern Patagonia: a big town on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi, set inside the national park of the same name. From the centre, city buses run to the trailheads of some of the best-known treks in the country, like Refugio Frey, Laguna Jakob or Cerro Campanario, and in winter to Cerro Catedral. It has plenty of hostels with kitchens, supermarkets close at hand and a bus station with services to Buenos Aires, El Bolsón, the Seven Lakes and Chile.

Getting around Bariloche
City buses are run by Mi Bus and can only be paid with a SUBE card, physical or digital (SUBE Digital works on Android with NFC): they don't take cash.
You can buy the SUBE card at kiosks or at the SUBE office in the Centro Cívico (Monday to Friday, 8 am to 3 pm) and top it up at kiosks, ATMs or with Mercado Pago, Ualá or MODO. A city ride costs ≈ US$ 1.5; to Catedral, ≈ US$ 5.2, and to the airport, ≈ US$ 4.6.
Line 20 links the bus station, the centre, Av. Bustillo, Cerro Campanario and Llao Llao; on weekdays it runs every 15 minutes during the day and takes about 55 minutes from the centre to Llao Llao.
Line 55 runs from the centre to Cerro Catedral every hour, from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm (return from 8:10 am to 9:10 pm), in about 35 minutes. Lines 10 and 13 go into Colonia Suiza, and line 10 carries on to Bahía López.
The centre (Mitre, Moreno, Salta and the lakefront) is walkable, although some streets climb steeply from the lake; for the bus station and Av. Bustillo you'll need a bus.
There are several remís (private car) firms (Remises Centro, Remises Mitre, Patagonia Remises), and you can rent bikes at Indómito.

The 3 best areas to stay in Bariloche
1Centre: Centro Cívico, Mitre and Calle Salta Everything on foot
🚌 ≈ 3.2 km from the bus station
This is the area for anyone arriving without a car who wants everything close by: the hostels are less than 1 km from the Centro Cívico, with supermarkets, exchange offices and Western Union a few blocks away, and lines 20, 55 and 72 leave from here. The downside: between June and January about 140,000 Argentine school-leavers arrive each year and nights on Mitre get noisy. Also, some streets climb steeply from the lake.
2East of the centre: Onelli and Tiscornia Close to the bus station
🚌 ≈ 2 km from the bus station
It suits anyone arriving or leaving by bus and looking for a good price: it's about 2 km from the bus station and 1-1.6 km from the Centro Cívico. Nearby there's a Carrefour with Western Union (Perito Moreno 909) and branches of La Anónima, and you can walk to the centre or take line 20. The downside: there's less going on at night and the lakefront is further away.
3West: Playa Bonita and Lake Gutiérrez Lake, forest and trekking
🚌 ≈ 10 to 12 km from the bus station
For anyone coming to hike who wants lake and forest. Line 20 passes Playa Bonita (Av. Bustillo km 7-8) every 15 minutes on its way to Campanario, Llao Llao and the trailhead for Laguna Jakob; Lake Gutiérrez sits at the foot of the mountain, with line 55 heading to Catedral and the Frey. The downside: to go out at night or do a big shop you have to take the bus into the centre.
The 8 recommended hostels in Bariloche
Eight hostels with dorms, good scores and lots of reviews: four in the centre, two to the east on the way to the bus station and two out of town, next to a lake. Distances to the bus station are measured in a straight line: on foot it's a bit more.

10I use it and recommend it
I've been to several hostels, but Perikos has something magical. First, the people who welcome you (in my case it was Colo and Maga). They made us feel very comfortable from minute one. Good location and facilities. Good atmosphere and camaraderie: most of the time we all had dinner together. Fridays are pizza and beer.

I've stayed in hostels in Bariloche 4 times and this was the best experience. The view from the hostel is top, one of the best in Argentina. The breakfast doesn't feel like a hostel one since, along with coffee, bread, milk and Zucaritas, they make you scrambled eggs.

8Winter gear for the Frey
In winter, Refugio Frey requires snowshoes or touring skis, waterproof clothing, poles and gloves. In July the average low is −1.6 °C and from October to February strong winds blow.

Weather and seasons in Bariloche
Bariloche has two high seasons: trekking season, from December to March, with the Frey and Otto Meiling refugios open and the driest weather of the year, and snow season, in July and August, with skiing at Catedral and the peak of the school-leaver groups. May and June are the wettest months. In high season it's best to reserve your hostel and refugio in advance.

Plan the rest of your trip
Bariloche has its own airport (BRC), with direct flights from Aerolíneas Argentinas and JetSMART from Buenos Aires, Córdoba and Mendoza, among other cities. By bus, Buenos Aires is 21-25 hours away (≈ US$ 106-163), and there are lots of departures to El Bolsón, Villa La Angostura, San Martín de los Andes via the Seven Lakes and Chile via the Cardenal Samoré Pass. If you're driving south on Route 40, watch out: between Perito Moreno and Gobernador Gregores there are 351 km without petrol stations.
How do I get from the airport to the hostel without paying for a taxi?
On Mi Bus line 72, which makes 11 trips a day between the airport, the bus station and the centre, and takes about 25 minutes. The fare is ≈ US$ 4.6 and is paid only with a SUBE card: it's best to arrive with your SUBE topped up or with SUBE Digital on an Android phone with NFC. The last bus leaves the airport at 10:20 pm.
Which hostel suits me if I'm coming to trek?
For the Frey and Catedral, Indómito (Lake Gutiérrez) is at the foot of the mountain, but far from the centre. For Laguna Jakob, Campanario and the Circuito Chico, Bonita Lake House works well, at Playa Bonita, on the line 20 route. If you want to get everywhere, the centre (Penthouse 1004, La Justina, Periko's) has all the bus lines and supermarkets nearby.
Do you have to reserve the Frey and Laguna Jakob refugios?
Yes. Club Andino Bariloche asks you to reserve in advance directly with each refugio, including for camping. The national park also requires you to fill in the online Trekking Register before setting off: it's free and compulsory. Refugio Frey is reserved on its website and Refugio San Martín (Jakob) through its reservation system; in September, only via WhatsApp.
How much does it cost to enter Nahuel Huapi National Park?
Since 01/06/2026, general entry costs ≈ US$ 23 a day for foreigners and ≈ US$ 10 for Argentines, and there's a flexible 3-day pass. It isn't charged across the whole park, only at specific access points: Puerto Pañuelo (Isla Victoria and Arrayanes), Mascardi (on the way to Tronador) and Quetrihué.
Can you cross to Chile by bus from Bariloche?
Yes, via the Cardenal Samoré Pass. Andesmar, Andesmar Chile and Vía TAC go to Puerto Montt (5 h 35 to 6 h 35, ≈ US$ 33-53) and Osorno (4 h to 5 h 15, ≈ US$ 30-49), with several departures a day. Total journey time depends on the wait at customs, which is at km 130 of the road.
How do I carry on to El Calafate or El Chaltén?
Overland it's more than 1,400 km along Route 40. Marga Taqsa runs the route, but doesn't publish timetables or seasons on its website: you have to ask via WhatsApp or on 0800-333-1188. The quickest alternative is to fly: Aerolíneas Argentinas links Bariloche with El Calafate about 5 times a week.
