Hostels in El Calafate: where to stay, how to get there and what to do
El Calafate is the gateway to the Perito Moreno Glacier and the southern section of Los Glaciares National Park, on the shores of Lago Argentino. For backpackers it's a must-stop: it has direct flights from Buenos Aires, its bus station is the hub for buses to El Chaltén, Puerto Natales and Route 40, and you can reach the glacier on a regular bus without paying for a tour. It's a small, walkable town that's expensive for Argentina, with hostels spread between the centre and the bus station area.

Getting around El Calafate
There's no city bus between the airport and town, and local guides list no city bus lines useful to travellers: El Calafate is explored on foot, by taxi or by bike.
Taxis are few and have no app: you hail them on the street or call by phone; they don't use meters and charge by zone; a ride within town costs ≈ US$ 2-5.
Uber, Cabify and DiDi don't operate, so for the airport or a very early start it's best to arrange your transfer in advance or ask your hostel.
Several shops rent bikes: they're handy for getting around town and reaching Laguna Nimez, but the Patagonian wind hits hard.
The shopping area is walkable (the central hostels are 5-13 min from Av. del Libertador); the bus station is ≈ 2 km to the east, on higher ground, and with a backpack and the wind you'll feel it.
Uber, Cabify, DiDi and taxis in El Calafate
Cabify and DiDi don't operate, and Uber has no municipal licence (Santa Cruz has had a law against these apps since 2018): for the airport, count on the shuttle, taxi or remís.
Uber No data
The most widely used in the country: Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Mendoza, Salta and Bariloche. It takes card, cash and Mercado Pago, and the same account you use at home works here.
Cabify Not available
Strong in Buenos Aires; also in Córdoba, Mendoza and Bariloche. Cash only in Buenos Aires, Rosario, Mendoza and Córdoba; to create an account it asks for a phone number and email address.
DiDi Not available
Works in Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Salta, Bariloche and other cities (not in Mendoza). You pay by card or in cash.
Status of each app according to their official sites and the local press; it may change. The buttons open the official stores (Google Play for Android, App Store for iPhone).
The 3 best areas to stay in El Calafate
1Centre: Av. del Libertador and parallel streets To get around on foot
🚌 1.6-2 km from the bus station
Av. del Libertador and its parallel streets (Moyano, Campaña del Desierto, Pantín) are where you'll find the banks, the La Anónima supermarket, the tour agencies and the bars. From the hostels in this area you reach the avenue in 5 to 13 minutes on foot, so you don't depend on taxis to eat or go out at night. The downside: the bus station is 1.6-2 km away (21-27 min on foot), and at the big hostels reviews mention noise and basic breakfasts.
2West of the centre: Padre Agostini and Casimiro Bigüa Small and quiet
🚌 ≈ 2.5 km from the bus station
Residential streets west of the avenue, 8-10 minutes on foot from the centre, near the DistriSur supermarket and several restaurants. Two of the hostels best rated by guests are here, small, with a much-praised garden and kitchen, and you can walk to the lakefront and Laguna Nimez in 15-20 minutes. The downside: it's the area furthest from the bus station (≈ 2.5 km, about 34 min on foot) and both hostels take cash only.
3Bus station and upper town For buses and the glacier
🚌 60 m to 1.1 km from the bus station
Around the Saint-Exupéry bus station and on the hill along Puerto Deseado and José R. Haro. It's the area with the most dorm beds and the biggest, newest hostels, and the most practical if you arrive or leave by bus early, go to the glacier on the regular bus or carry on to El Chaltén. The downside: the centre is 1.4-2.1 km away (18-28 min on foot) and to go out at night you'll have to walk or pay for a taxi.
The 8 recommended hostels in El Calafate
Eight hostels with dorm beds, chosen by score and number of guest reviews: three by the bus station, three in the centre and two in the quiet west. If you're going to pay on arrival, check the currency first and whether the price includes taxes.

They met all expectations. Breakfast was very early, which was ideal if you were doing early tours. The night staff were spectacular, they went the extra mile for those who had insomnia. And finally, a score of 10, and if there were a higher one I'd give it.

The hostel, honestly, very, very good. The hostel was very clean, the rooms were spacious and had a very good system for keeping things organised. Comfortable beds and well-ventilated rooms. Breakfast is excellent: with fruit, eggs, a variety of breads, biscuits and sponge cakes.

Wonderful staff, the place is very well organised; it had been a while since I'd been to a hostel that took such care of the space when it comes to living together. Backpacker tips for El Calafate
1Arrive with pesos in cash
ATMs have low withdrawal limits and in high season they sometimes run out of notes; also, Aonikenk and 64Bigüa only take cash. The banks (Nación, Santa Cruz, Patagonia) are on Av. del Libertador between numbers 1285 and 1408, Santander at Julio A. Roca 1257, and there are exchange offices along the avenue and two Western Union points.
2Check the hostel's currency and taxes
Some reviews complain about being charged 21 % VAT or a different exchange rate from the one on their reservation. Before you arrive, message the hostel to ask whether the price is final and in which currency you pay.
3Hit the supermarket before the glacier
La Anónima has branches at Av. del Libertador 902 and Hermanos Vidal 166, and there's a DistriSur on the avenue, on the west side. On the Minitrekking they don't sell food or drink: bring everything; at the walkways there is a restaurant and a snack bar.
4Buy your park entry online
You buy it at ventaweb.apn.gob.ar; a second day within 72 h is half price, and there are 3- and 7-day Flexipasses valid for 6 months. At the glacier you pay by card or with pesos in cash, never with dollars; in the El Chaltén area, only online by card.
5If you're heading on to Torres del Paine
Fill in Chile's digital SAG sworn declaration at least 24 h before and bring your passport and pesos for the bus station fee. The Cancha Carrera / Cerro Castillo crossing is open from 8 am to 9 pm and formalities take 15 min to 1 h on each side (up to 1-3 h in high season).

8Straight from the plane to El Chaltén
