Hostels in Cafayate: where to stay, how to get there and what to do
Cafayate is a town in the Calchaquí Valleys, at about 1,660 m and 189 km south of Salta along National Route 68. It's the capital of Torrontés wine: several wineries are a few blocks from the plaza and can be visited on foot or by bike. From here you can explore the Quebrada de las Conchas, about 49 km away, combining bus and bike, and Route 40 to Cachi starts here, on gravel. This guide brings together the hostels, the bus from Salta and what to do on your own.

Getting around Cafayate
Cafayate is small and walkable: the guides list no city buses or transport card, and the Wikivoyage guide says the town is covered on foot.
Plaza 20 de Febrero, the Mercado Municipal and the Mercado Artesanal are a few blocks from each other; from the bus station to the plaza it's ≈ 0.9 km as the crow flies (≈ 1.3 km by street).
There are several bike rental points around the plaza; it's the usual way to reach the farther wineries and Los Médanos. The price per day isn't confirmed, so ask before you rent.
Taxis and remises (private cars) are dispatched by local radio services (Radio Taxi Nuestra Señora del Rosario, Radio Taxi San Cayetano and Remises Del Milagro); fares aren't confirmed, so ask the price before getting in.
To withdraw cash there's Banco Nación (Nuestra Señora del Rosario 103), Macro (Mitre 22) and two ATMs on the plaza.

Backpacker tips for Cafayate
1Bring cash from Salta
Downtown there's Banco Nación, Macro and two ATMs on the plaza, but it's a small town: withdraw cash before you leave. Only Cielito Lindo states that it accepts credit and debit cards; at the others, ask how to pay.
2Quebrada de las Conchas without a car: bus and bike
Take the bus to Salta with your bike loaded on, get off at the Garganta del Diablo (≈ 49 km) and ride back. Bring at least 2 litres of water, a cap, sunscreen and a packed lunch; the ride back is a gentle uphill (≈ 1,533 m at the Garganta and ≈ 1,626 m in Cafayate).
3Plan B for getting back from the Quebrada
If you don't want to pedal, the Flecha Bus stop in the Quebrada is La Yesera, ≈ 31 km from Cafayate, with buses to town roughly every ≈ 4 h. Confirm the time before you get off.
4Wineries on foot: check the hours
Domingo Hermanos does visits at fixed times, with a midday break (≈ 12:30 to 15:00), and Nanni is open from 9:30 to 18:30. Vasija Secreta offers a free tasting of 4 wines. Confirm before walking over.
5Cooking pays off
A meal with wine at Machacha runs around ≈ US$ 16. Cielito Lindo and Hostal Mechita Mamani have a shared kitchen, and the Mercado Municipal is downtown.
6Altitude and sun
At ≈ 1,660 m altitude sickness isn't expected, but the sun is strong and winter nights are cold. If you continue to Cachi (≈ 2,300 m) or the Puna, go up slowly and drink plenty of water.
7Route 40 to Cachi: gravel and little traffic
Only the first ≈ 23-24 km are paved; after that it's gravel with dips. Allow 2 days: traffic is scarce and waiting for a hitch can be long. A direct bus isn't confirmed.
8Book ahead in high season
The town fills up during the winter and summer holidays and for the Serenata a Cafayate, at the end of February. It's best to book your hostel and the bus from Salta in advance.

Weather and seasons in Cafayate
The high seasons are January-February (with the Serenata a Cafayate at the end of February) and July, because of the winter holidays: book your hostel and bus in advance. From April to June and from September to November it's dry and mild, best for excursions, and a local guide places the National Torrontés Wine Festival in November. From December to March it rains heavily and Route 40 towards Cachi gets complicated.

How do you visit the wineries without a car?
On foot and by bike. Nanni, El Tránsito and Domingo Hermanos are less than 600 m from the plaza; Vasija Secreta and El Esteco are ≈ 1-1.5 km away. Vasija Secreta offers a free tasting of 4 wines and Nanni a free guided visit. There are bike circuits of 5, 7 and 18 km.
