Hostels in San Martín de los Andes: where to stay, how to get there and what to do
San Martín de los Andes is a town of about 23,500 people at 640 m, on the shores of Lake Lácar, within the Lanín National Park area. For backpackers it's the northern end of the Seven Lakes Route: you arrive by bus from Bariloche or Villa La Angostura, and buses leave from here to Pucón (Chile). The centre is walkable: from the bus station to the plaza it's 800 metres. In summer there are beaches and a boat to Quila Quina; in winter, skiing at Chapelco.

The boat to Quila Quina leaves from the Lácar waterfront, a few blocks from the bus station.

The 3 best areas to stay in San Martín de los Andes
1Centre: bus station and waterfront For arriving by bus
🚌 0.15-0.36 km from the bus station
This is the area between the bus station and the Lácar waterfront, home to Casa 45 and Rukalhue. Casa 45 is 150 m from the bus station and Rukalhue 360 m; the San Martín beach is 150-300 m away and the restaurants 200-400 m. Pros: you don't need a taxi for anything and guests rate the location 9.7. Cons: Rukalhue is large and has less of a small-hostel feel.
2North centre: Fosbery and Elordi Quieter streets
🚌 ≈ 1.1-1.3 km from the bus station
These are the blocks north of Plaza San Martín, on Fosbery and Elordi, home to Puma Hostel and El Oso Andaluz. The plaza is an 8 to 11 minute walk and there are several restaurants 300-650 m away. Pros: quieter streets while still being able to walk everywhere, and free bikes at El Oso Andaluz. Cons: the beach is 0.9-1.2 km away and, from the bus station with your backpack, it's a quarter-hour walk.
This is the avenue into town, home to Bike Hostel, 1 km from the plaza (14 minutes on foot). There's a restaurant 50 m away, a brewery 300 m away and shops, and the hostel has free parking: it suits those arriving by car or bike. Cons: from the bus station it's a 25-minute walk with your backpack, the beach is 1.8 km away and you can hear the avenue traffic at night.

Everything really good: comfortable beds, personal light and socket, a large, well-equipped kitchen, enough common areas. All the girls who looked after us had super good vibes. I'd add more bathrooms: there are two full bathrooms for 2-3 shared rooms, so sometimes you have to wait a long time.

Backpacker tips for San Martín de los Andes
1Bring cash in pesos
All five hostels take cash, and Puma, Rukalhue and El Oso Andaluz also ask for a deposit or advance payment by bank transfer. If you don't have an Argentine bank account, message the hostel before you reserve.
2Ask about the VAT exemption
Puma and Rukalhue charge an extra 21 % to Argentines and residents; foreigners are exempt if they pay with a foreign card or transfer and show their passport. As they take cash, ask how they apply the exemption.
3From the airport, by bus
The Expreso Colonia San Martín – Junín bus stops at Chapelco and takes about 35 minutes. Buy and top up a SUBE card at the kiosk on the airport's ground floor and check the timetable before you fly.
4Seven Lakes in winter: check first
In 2026 RN 40 had night-time closures due to snowfall and a landslide, and reopened with mandatory chains. Don't drive it at night and check with Vialidad Nacional (the national roads agency) on the day.
5Cross into Chile without fruit or vegetables
The Mamuil Malal pass is open from 8:00 to 19:00 from September 2026. Chile's SAG confiscates fruit, vegetables, plants and animal products: don't carry them in your backpack.
6Free beach or boat
Playa Catritre is free if you walk or cycle in. The boat to Quila Quina costs ≈ US$ 45 return (winter 2026 fare), doesn't include Lanín National Park entry and only runs with a minimum number of passengers and good weather.
7Rain gear
June is the wettest month (262 mm) and from May to July there's more than 100 mm of rain a month. December, January and February are the driest months.
8Let them know if you arrive at night
Check-in at Rukalhue closes at 22:00 and at Puma at 22:30, and Bike Hostel's door is locked from 3:00 to 7:30. If your bus arrives late, let the hostel know in good time.

Tours you can book online
Almost everything in San Martín can be done on your own: beaches, viewpoint and boat all leave from the centre. For the boat trip to Hua Hum or a day at Chapelco, these are the tours you can reserve.
Weather and seasons in San Martín de los Andes
January and February are the driest and warmest months: the beaches are open, with lifeguards at Catritre, and the boat runs to Quila Quina. From July to September skiing at Chapelco takes over, with possible closures and chains on the Seven Lakes Route. April to June and October-November are low season: May and June are the wettest and the ski resort isn't operating.

Plan the rest of your trip
By air, Chapelco airport (CPC) has flights from Aerolíneas Argentinas from Aeroparque and, in season, from Ezeiza; from JetSMART from Aeroparque, and from American Jet from Neuquén three times a week. There are no direct flights from Brazil or Chile: you arrive via Santiago or via Bariloche. By bus, Albus and Viatac link San Martín with Bariloche (≈ 3 h 55, ≈ US$ 20-36) and Villa La Angostura (≈ 2 h 20, ≈ US$ 12-20); Vía Bariloche and Nueva Chevallier come from Buenos Aires (≈ US$ 71-149), and Igi Llaima crosses to Pucón and Temuco via the Mamuil Malal pass. By car, the Seven Lakes Route is 108 paved km to Villa La Angostura.
How do I get from Chapelco airport to the centre without a taxi?
Take the Expreso Colonia bus that links San Martín with Junín de los Andes: it stops at the airport and takes about 35 minutes to town. You pay with SUBE, which you can buy and top up at the kiosk on the ground floor; the stop is at the exit, next to the car rentals. By taxi or remís it's about 30 minutes for 23 km.
Which hostel is closest to the bus station?
Casa 45, 150 metres away (2 minutes on foot), and Rukalhue, 360 metres away (5 minutes). Both are between the bus station and the Lake Lácar waterfront. Puma Hostel and El Oso Andaluz are 14-18 minutes on foot, and Bike Hostel, on Avenida Koessler, about 25 minutes. If you arrive at night with your backpack, the first area is the best bet.
How do I continue to Bariloche: via the Seven Lakes or via La Rinconada?
Via La Rinconada it's about 158-161 km; via the Seven Lakes, about 188 km, passing through Villa La Angostura. Albus and Viatac have one bus a day each, taking about 3 h 55 (≈ US$ 20-36); ask at the ticket office which road it takes. If you want to see the lakes at a relaxed pace, stop in Villa La Angostura: the bus gets there in 2 h 20.
Can I cross to Pucón by bus?
Yes. Igi Llaima links San Martín and Junín de los Andes with Pucón, Villarrica and Temuco via the Mamuil Malal pass. It runs six days a week, Tuesday to Sunday, and takes about 4 h 18 to Pucón. From September 2026 the pass is open from 8:00 to 19:00. Don't carry fresh fruit or vegetables: Chile's SAG inspection confiscates them.
Do I need cash for the hostels?
Yes. All five hostels in the guide take cash only. Puma, Rukalhue and El Oso Andaluz also ask for a deposit or advance payment by bank transfer, which is tricky if you don't have an Argentine bank account. Message the hostel before you reserve and ask how they charge foreigners and whether they apply the 21 % VAT exemption.
When is the best time to go: summer or winter?
